The Talented Lauren Legette

If you saw Lauren Legette on Hampton’s campus you would probably say she is just another girl. The truth is, she is exact the opposite. Lauren is a junior at Hampton University, majoring in Broadcast journalism but she does so much more.

She’s a co-facilitator of the Student leadership program and works with the sports marketing team at events on campus. And lets not forget her side job, which is voice overs for commercials. Basically Lauren’s got more jobs than a single mom with five kids.

If you want to know where to find her, head to the next Hampton basketball game. She’ll be the pleasant voice on the loud-speaker. If you’re lucky you might win a prize.

Let ‘Em In

Now that Mark McGuire has finally told America what they already assumed about his steroid abuse, I think it is time Major League Baseball writers let players with steroid cloud into Cooperstown. The entire decade of the 90’s has a cloud of guilt when it comes to steroids in baseball. Every player who has been successful is looked at suspiciously because of the errors of a few. Even players who show no signs of performance enhancement have been questioned because of that era.

Soon to be Hall of Fame closer Mariano Rivera was asked had he used steroids because he has been so good even into his 40’s. It is unfair to the players who have done nothing wrong to always have the cloud above their head. So Baseball writers should vote PED users into the hall and put an asterisk next to the name. This way they won’t have to worry about the current home run record holder or a 300 game, 7 CY Young winning pitcher not being represented in the hall.

I say let them in and let history sort out the rest. 50 years from now their legacy will be whatever they made it and the players in that era who didn’t cheat will not have to suffer the consequences of a few.

Offense wins Championships

Take a close look a the teams left in the playoffs. See anything similar? Well minus the Cinderella New York Jets, every team left in the playoffs has a high scoring offense. The Indianapolis Colts, Minnesota Vikings and the New Orléans Saints all finished the season ranked in the top ten in points per game and yards per game.

This is an interesting trend that goes against all conventional sports knowledge. Defense is supposed to be the cornerstone of a great team. Defense is supposed to step up in big moments and win it for the  home team. They don’t hold up O’s and fences in the stands. But somehow three high-powered offensive teams are only two wins away from hoisting the Lombardi trophy.

Now with all due respect going to the Jets, nobody expected them to be in this situation. Although they have a great defense, which is ranked number one in the league, they have a tough time scoring points consistently. The trend now seen in the league is score, score, score until time runs out. It is possible that the Jets could win the Superbowl, but very unlikely. Chances are we will see two offensive giants battle it out for the championship.

Starbury Goes Overseas

Former NBA superstar Stephon Marbury has finally found a basketball team. Just not a team in the NBA. Marbury will be playing basketball for the Shanxi team in the Chinese Basketball Association. The team believes that adding Marbury will boost ticket sales and team wins.

It is an interesting situation for a guy who was in the conversation as one of the top players at the point guard position just a few years ago. However, his attitude did not agree with two hall of famers, Larry Brown and Isiah  Thomas. The deterioration of the latter relationship caused Marbury to be exiled from the New York Knicks. His last shot with an NBA team was with the Boston Celtics, but they did not bring him back for a second year.

If he plans to make this job work he will have to do a better job of being a  team player. The last NBA player to play for this team, Bonzi Wells, was fired for coming back late from a vacation and he was averaging 34 points per game. Looking at Marbury’s past most would say he can’t make it work but he’ll have to figure out a way if he ever wants to play in the NBA again. If all else fails he can always use this experience to market his shoe brand to China.

From Zero to Zero

NBA superstar. 100 million dollar man. Convicted felon? One of these words doesn’t fit but unfortunately it is a reality for the man known to sports fans as Agent Zero. Gilbert Arenas will most likely be going to prison for a while on weapons possession charges, which carries a 5 year maximum sentence.

Although there have been many versions of what happened between Arenas and his teamate, Javaris Crittenton, Arenas stated in court reports that the fued started with money owed in a card game. It escalated when Arenas said he would burn Crittenton’s car or shoot him in the face. Then Crittenton said he would shoot Arenas in his knee. Two days later Arenas brought four guns to the locker room, laid them out and placed a not beside them the said: “Pick One”. That led Crittenton to get his own gun and threaten Arenas.

When NBA commisioner David Stern heard about it, he gave Arenas the benefit of the doubt and allowed him to play while it was being sorted out. Unfortunately Arenas did not see the severity of the situation and made joking remarks about the commissioners attitude. That coupled with a pre-meditated routine that had Arenas in the middle of the pre-game huddle pretending to shoot guns caused him to be suspended from the league indefinately.

Now Arenas has much more to worry about. His sponsor, Addidas, has dropped him because of his current situation and the Wizards are seeking to void his contract. On top of his money issues, it is not clear whether David Stern will be willing to let Arenas back in the league so quickly. His carrer and life are pretty much at a standstill until his sentencing date, which is March 26. Until then he’ll have to sit and think about how he went from the hero know as Agent Zero to an outcast.

Allow me to Reintroduce Myself…

Hello wordpress world! My name is Malik Shabazz Smith and I am a junior, broadcast journalism major at Hampton University. I was born and raised in Arverne, New York along with two older brothers, both are also in college and soon to be graduates. At my own college I try to be as active as possible in my field of study. I currently write for the sports section of the school newspaper as well as working with the radio station in covering sports.

Sports has been my main passion for as long as I could remember. Before I realized it I was always involved with sports in some way. At a young age my taught me the joys of running lay-up lines from sun up to sun down and the sweet science of boxing. In high school I was the co-captain of the men’s track team for two years. When I moved on to college I realized I still wanted to be involved in sports so I decided that I wanted to be a sports writer/analyst/broadcaster/whatever else I could do that involved sports.

Now that I am three years into my college education, I see that being a sports writer is going to take more than I thought. However, I have never been more sure that this is where I want to go in life. My goal is to be my own brand and possibly start my own sports magazine. For now I’m just enjoying the ride.
